IT-1012 Supported Web Browsers

Effective Date: 2015-01-01

1.0 Overview

In order to ensure the security of the Florida Institute of Technology network and web presence, software products such as Internet Web Browsers need to be kept up to date with the latest security patches to protect against vunerabilities. Web Browsers that are no longer maintained by their manufacturers lack the most recent security updates and enhancements.

2.0 Purpose

This policy outlines the requirement that all Web Browsers on the Florida Institute of Technology network must be currently supported by their manufacturer.

3.0 Scope

This policy applies to all devices connected to the Florida Institute of Technology network, and all users of the Florida Institute of Technology network services.

4.0 Policies

Devices with Web Browsers that are no longer supported by their manufacturer are not supported by Florida Institute of Technology Web Services and Information Technology departments. Out of date Web Browsers are susceptible to many critical security vulnerabilities and many of those vulnerabilities might not be public. Running devices with such web browsers puts the university at an increased risk for compromise.

The following Web Browsers may be used on the university network and are supported to ensure compatibility with the University's website and required internet applications:

  • Microsoft Internet Explorer 9.0 and above
  • Firefox 37 and above or Firefox 31.6.0esr
  • Opera 28 and above
  • Safari 6.2.5 and above
  • Chrome 42.0.2311 and above

The websites of the web browser providers should provide information on whether or not a specific web browser is currently supported.

5.0 Enforcement

Devices running unsupported web browsers may not function correctly with the internet applications associated with the University. Unsupported web browsers may also increase the risk of infection and security vunerabilities that could potentially affect the University network and it's associated services. If a user is running an unsupported web browser and requires technical assistance, they will be advised to update their web browser.
