The Ph.D. in Biomedical Engineering

Medical technology continues to advance thanks to creative engineers who develop solutions to solve the challenges of today's medical professionals. Focused on helping all of us live healthier, more active lives, biomedical engineers research and apply their expertise to product development, instrumentation, electronics, mechanics and computer software used in the medical industry. Florida Tech's Ph.D. in biomedical engineering program provides students with the advanced knowledge and research methodologies needed for this exciting career.

Experienced and Knowledgeable Faculty

The Ph.D. in biomedical engineering program is collaborative, students working side-by-side with  professors, doctors and medical professionals to stay on the leading edge of industry advancements. The region's growing medical community and research laboratories provide students an opportunity to conduct research, discover career paths, and apply creative solutions to real-world challenges in a robust learning environment. Faculty members are involved in biomedical research topics and are experts in mechanical and aerospace engineering, chemical engineering, electrical and computer engineering, and computer science.

High-Tech Laboratories

The many resources and facilities on campus allow students earning a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering to tailor their research to advanced laboratory experiences in cardiovascular, pharmacology, biomaterials and cancer. Facilities include:

  • Biomedical Instrumentation Laboratory
  • Cardiovascular Research Laboratory
  • Center for Medical Materials and Biophotonics
  • Laser, Optics and Instrumentation Laboratory
  • Biomaterials Laboratory
  • High-Resolution Microscopy and Advanced Imaging Center
  • Machine Shop
  • Electronic Shop
  • Structural Testing Laboratory
  • Applied Perception Laboratory

Strategic Location

Florida Tech's prime location in the heart of Florida's Space Coast gives students in the Ph.D. in biomedical engineering program access to the fourth largest high-tech workforce in the nation. The university's many ties and partnerships with Fortune 500, high-tech and healthcare firms gives doctoral students many opportunities for internships, research, and employment.

Career Opportunities

According to the United States Department of Labor, Bureau of Labor Statistics, employment of biomedical engineers is projected to grow 27 percent through 2022. This is due primarily to an aging baby-boomer population. On average, graduates with a Ph.D. in biomedical engineering have higher salaries and employment rates than those with an undergraduate or master's degree, often a result of the experience in advanced, long-term research. Biomedical engineers are found in product design and development, research, physiology, pharmaceutical development, materials science and technology environments.
